The Munich tennis club MTTC Iphitos is at home on one of the most attractive tennis courts in Germany, beautifully situated at the northern end of the English Garden. International tournaments and thrilling Davis Cup matches have made Iphitos famous in the tennis world.
Every spring, the tennis scene meets at Aumeisterweg for the BMW Open, the opening tournament of the ATP series in Germany. Famous players have been guests here, including John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, Boris Becker, Michael Stich and Roger Federer. But it is above all the elegant yet friendly ambience of the club that has characterized the Iphitos since it was founded in 1892.
The traditional club has continued to develop and is now interpreted as a modern premium tennis club by a new generation of volunteer board members and competent members.
This also includes establishing the club as a platform for networking and relaxation – sporting activities at every level, entertaining events, programs for children and young families and, last but not least, good gastronomy with a fantastic sun terrace. Club life at Iphitos has flair and charm. Its location on the edge of a nature reserve, its history of sporting success and, last but not least, its approx. 1,400 members promise a sporting and informal atmosphere.
And as a founding member of the Leading Tennis Clubs of Germany, the association of eleven well-known German tennis clubs, which also includes Rochusclub Düsseldorf and TC Blau-Weiß Berlin, for example, MTTC Iphitos is also regarded as an important address for the white sport beyond the Bavarian state borders.
The Board of MTTC Iphitos e.V. is responsible for the strategic planning, operational success and representation of the association. It currently consists of five members: Dr. Fabian Tross as chairman, Maximilian Klee and Dr. Eva Nase as deputy chairmen and Gabriele Bodczek and Dr. Marc Tenbücken as additional board members.

On the initiative of the International Tennis Club of Germany and its President Alex Kurucz, the “Leading Tennis Clubs of Germany” cooperation group was founded in spring 2009. The purpose of this community is the regular exchange of information on all club-relevant topics, especially in the areas of administration, finance, taxes and marketing, as well as sporting and social meetings between members of these clubs.
Membership of this exclusive and limited circle is subject to strict conditions. The clubs must have a large number of members and an exceptionally prestigious facility, be committed to the tradition of tennis and be able to demonstrate particular sporting success with teams or as tournament organizers.
The following clubs belong to this group so far: Blau-Weiss Berlin, Rochusclub Düsseldorf, Grün-Weiss Mannheim, MTTC Iphitos München, Frankfurter TC Palmengarten, ETUF Essen, DTV Hannover, Der Club an der Alster, TC Blau-Weiss Dresden-Blasewitz, KTHC Stadion Köln, the International Tennis Club of Germany and KTHC Stadion Köln.
A special highlight for members of the individual clubs is the free right to play on the courses of the other partner clubs as part of short-term visits. However, prior registration at the respective club secretariat is required. This will also apply for a certain period to student members who are studying in the city of another partner club.

White sport began in Munich in 1892, when the first grass (lawn) pitch was laid out in the old Rosipalpark on Leopoldstraße. Under the expert guidance of Cape Dutchman Hugo Naude, a student of painting and music, Prince Albert of Bavaria, Munich sports pioneer Richard Blaul and 17 other supporters founded the first Munich tennis club.
Why did they call him Iphitos? Iphitos was the legendary king of Elis, a landscape in the west of the Peloponnese with the capital Olympia, who revived the Olympic Games of antiquity in 776 BC – just as Baron Coubertin later revived the games of modern times.
The annual fee at that time was six gold marks, the admission fee four gold marks. And yet in 1906, the club already had 74 women and 75 men as members and organized major tournaments.
In 1913, Iphitos opened its new premises on Belgradstrasse, where the club continued its rapid rise after the First World War.
In 1930, the Munich Tennis and Tournament Club (MTTC) Iphitos took over the tennis stadium on Aumeisterweg on the edge of the English Garden from a sports ground company, where it is still based today. Thanks to the beauty of the grounds and its International Bavarian Tennis Championships (now the BMW OPEN by American Express), the club soon became known beyond the borders of Bavaria. Gottfried v. Cramm, Budge Patty, Ken Rosewall, later Christian Kuhnke, Niki Pilic, Ion Tiriac, Guillermo Vilas, John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Stefan Edberg, Ivan Lendl, Boris Becker, Michael Stich, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, Andy Murray and many more thrilled the spectators at Aumeisterweg with top-class matches.
However, team sport has always been very important at Iphitos, culminating in the German men’s championship in 1990. Incidentally, Michael Stich, the 1991 Wimbledon winner, was the number one player at the time.
